where the air is thick and opaque

on the way to manhattan from the airport i tried to count how many times i have been to new york city. i lost count around 25. it is absolutely amazing to me that even after all those visits, i am enamored and smitten by nyc every single time. it gets under my skin, that new york magic, and tickles me pink.

one perk to going somewhere iconic that you’ve been to many times before is that you don’t have to stress about fitting all the must-dos in. my day in nyc was so relaxing and i just went wherever i wanted without any worry about seeing this or that. i did a lot of walking, all the while marveling at the love i have for this great city that gets a little buried when i am away but surfaces so quickly and with panache when i’m back.

i went to the met to enjoy some time on the rooftop (one of my all-time favourite views on earth) and figured i might as well stop by to see some old friends while i was at it:IMG_0160IMG_0162IMG_0168
the impressionism and modern exhibits really do feel like chums i haven’t seen in a while and am happy to reconnect with. those rooms are so dandily familiar to me, and i love the warm feeling of being wrapped up in art.

then, to the roof! it was so hot and humid that i couldn’t spent tooo much time up there, but i was pretty much the only one around since the museum had just opened, and i reveled in the view and loved the current exhibit.

my brother tal (who lives in new york with his expecting wife! – she was in switzerland) and i walked through central park and past the bethesda fountain during his lunch break. the park was buzzing with summer fun and the air was wet and sweet; thick and opaque. we walked to lincoln square where we parted ways and i continued my lazy stroll, breathing in new york and pushing through jet lag and thinking about my trip. my brother is one of the coolest people on the planet. seriously, if you knew him you would agree.

i met up with my dear old friend lizzie for lunch at
the shake shack. in all those visits to new york, i had never been to the shake shack, which is, if you ask some people, quite the travesty. the burger was fantastic, and the sitting-on-the-back-patio-talking-with-a- beloved-friend-i-hadn’t-seen-in-years was even better. there is something so gorgeously comforting about catching up with someone who knows exactly where you came from, with whom you can remember memories back to junior high.

and then it was talking with tal, a subway ride to the airport, and back to utah, a little extra new york city pumping through my veins.

”nyc, there’s something about you” –annie
“if i can make it there, i can make it anywhere” –frank
”concrete jungle where dreams are made of” –jayz
….let’s hear it for new york, new york, new york
