surprise!

one of my goals/new years resolutions for 2012 was to do a big surprise. a few months ago as i talked with my niece hazel about her forthcoming baptism and told her how much i wished i could come, i realized there was my surprise opportunity. i enlisted my brother-in-law jeff as my confidant and bought a plane ticket and didn’t tell anyone.

i was so giddy all last week thinking about my niece and sister’s reactions, and about being back in the shumway home, and back in boston, and with hazel on her special day, and talking to saydi face-to-face.

i could hardly contain myself in the cab from the airport. i was so bubbly excited. i knocked on the door and hazel gasped when she opened it. we got ready for saydi to get home and i waited hidden in the kitchen. she walked in, saw me and said “you’ve got to be kidding me!” - very genuinely surprised.

i tried to take a video of their reactions, but they did not turn out very well at all!
i kind of love these blurry screen shots though. these were two very fantastic moments in time.

my mom flew into town for the baptism and also had no idea i had come too. saydi and i cooked up a funny plan to surprise her, which included me wearing a ridiculous wig and pretending i was a crazy person wandering around the airport and bumping into people. it was pretty hilarious. we were laughing to tears.
