to luxembourg and back in a day

Image
it was ian’s turn to plan our weekly date. so, on saturday, we woke up at 5:30am, hopped on a train to brussels, drove to luxembourg, turned right around and drove back to brussels, took the train back to london, and arrived home at 9:30pm. it was ridiculous. completely! but this kind of adventure is just ian’s thing, his shtick. he’s a numbers guy that loves collecting countries - even as his wife reminds him that it’s silly. he cheerfully accompanies me through experiences he wouldn’t chose himself or doesn’t understand the appeal of; he makes efforts to appreciate modern art and eclectic foods and the ballet; he is constantly trying to help me check things off my bucket list that aren’t on (or anywhere near!) his. so, i try to do the same kind of thing for him. i wake up at 5:30, entertain our baby on long train and car rides, get excited when we cross a border, and thank him for bringing me on an adventure. we all three legitimately had an awesome time on saturday. we took ...

a ski weekend in kitzbuhel

last weekend we popped down to the austrian alps to do a bit of skiing/snowboarding. ian and i have been wanting to have a ski day together for a long time (and we had our eyes set on kitzbuhel because our friends went there and it looked amazing ), but pregnancy and a new baby put it off … and then as moses grew we weren’t sure how to make it work because obviously we’d need an all-day babysitter. when my cousin aubrey moved to england to study at oxford, we realized it would work perfect to bring her with us to be our babysitter for a ski weekend – especially because she is a really big skier! we flew to munich on thursday night, aubrey skiied on friday, and we skiied (me) / snowboarded (ian) on saturday. i spent the month leading up to our ski trip hoping, hoping, hoping for fresh snow at kitzbuhel. i hoped so hard for powder that i forgot to hope for some visibility! and we ended up skiing through a blizzard – haha! the weather and lack of scenery (which was the principle reaso...

ringing in the new in der schweiz

after we booked our tickets to switzerland for new years, (my brother and sister-in-law) tal and anita asked us what we wanted to do while we were there. we just said one word: mountains. and we may have also mentioned we were hoping to see some snow. we definitely got to enjoy mountains (t&a were so great bringing us to several different viewpoints/places to explore)! and we also got to see something even better than snow – incredible frost (it actually did snow while we were there, but only the night before we left in the wee hours to get to the airport and home to london). after we came down talalpsee – that amazing frozen lake – we drove towards a hilltop with beautiful views of some alps for sunset. on the way we passed through a frosty wonderland and pulled over to explore a little. we were all freaking out a little at how magical everything was encrusted with a delicate and gorgeous layer of ice crystals. (can you believe there’s no snow in these photos?!)   we wer...
