truth and dare

speaking of wonderful words, i was recently made aware that once john steinbeck wrote a letter to his son about love. young thom told his pa that he thought he was in love, and here is how his father responded…

dear thom:
we had your letter this morning. i will answer it from my point of view.
first - if you are in love - that's a good thing - that's about the best thing that can happen to anyone. don't let anyone make it small or light to you.
second - there are several kinds of love. one is a selfish, mean, grasping, egotistical thing which uses love for self-importance. this is the ugly and crippling kind. the other is an outpouring of everything good in you - of kindness, and consideration and respect - not only the social respect of manners but the greatest respect which is recognition of another person as unique and valuable. the first kind can make you sick and small and weak but the second can release in you strength, and courage and goodness and even wisdom you didn't know you had.
you say this is not puppy love. if you feel so deeply - of course it isn't puppy love.
but I don't think you were asking me what you feel. you know that better than anyone. what you wanted me to help you with is what to do about it - and that i can tell you.
glory in it for one thing and be very glad and grateful for it.
the object of love is the best and most beautiful. try to live up to it.
if you love someone - there is no possible harm in saying so - only you must remember that some people are very shy and sometimes the saying must take that shyness into consideration.
girls have a way of knowing or feeling what you feel, but they usually like to hear it also.
it sometimes happens that what you feel inside is not returned for one reason or another - but that does not make your feeling less valuable and good.
lastly, i know your feeling because i have it and i am glad you have it.
and don't worry about losing. if it is right, it happens - the main thing is not to hurry. nothing good gets away.
love,
fa

i absolutely love this, and i believe what mr. steinbeck wrote is true. true love is true. i just know it.

in addition to sharing this bit of truth tonight, i also want to issue a dare (you know, just to round things out, 8th grade style) to my blog readers. blog stats and analytics are quite fascinating. there are quite a few of you who drop by and see what i have to say or share. i have a sneaky feeling that you are a pretty neat group of people. but analytics only give me numbers, and quite honestly, i want to know a little about who is behind those numbers! people are so, so great.

so … i triple dog dare you to leave a comment on this post and tell me why you’re reading my little blog, or what your thoughts are on true love, or what steinbeck book i should read next, or what your favourite color is, or what makes you feel “dripping with passion.”

do you remember what happens to those kids who don’t follow through on their dare when playing “truth or dare”???

me, either. hmmmm. but just leave me a comment. i want to know a bit of who you are. because i think i like you.

  2. I am S. I read your blog because I think life should be loved as much as you love it. You're blog is funny, sweet and full of joy. My favorite colour is light blue. I think being in love is probably one of the best things life can offer us. Althought we might have heartbreaks or rejections, we should always remember the joyful moments that happen when we are in love. Have a lovely week-end Charity (:

  3. Because you are so full of love and life and goodness and testimony. I think you are terrific. I am a mother of two, homeschool mom, gardener, runner, bishops wife, book reader, vegan organic cook, byu grad, I love my life and am so thankful for the gospel.

  4. I found your blog through your sister, Shawni's blog. How can anyone resist checking a blog with a title like yours??? :) I continue to read your blog because I love your zest and vibrancy for life. 6. Hi! I never leave comments like this... but couldn't resist your appeal. You have an inspiring outlook on life and your blog is joyful and happy - just what this world needs more of! I guess that's the great thing about technology... it's fun to get to know people you otherwise would most likely never cross paths with.
Incidentally, I also have a brother who lives in Palo Alto...
I'm a mom, a wife, a sister, a daughter, a friend, a young women's leader, a runner and 2-time Ironman, a quilter, love to travel (especially to England/London - I lived there as a child!) and love the gospel and my life. And I'm way too indecisive to ever pick a favorite color!
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  7. I read your blog for absolutely selfish reasons. You lift me after a hard day teaching 12,13, and 14 year olds reading in Special Education. I drag myself home after a 9 hour day, (it might also have to do with the fact that I have mylofybrosis, heart disease, 3 hernias, and being a single mother and grandmother) and there you are--Dripping with Passion---exploring the world and sharing your testimony through pictures and beautiful words. It makes me wish I had lived my life at your age to such a fantastic degree. Keep it up, and thank you so very much!:)

  8. Hello there,

My name is Ana and I actually came across your blog though your sister's (Shawni) and I just LOVE how you describe your passion for that beautiful event we call mortal life!
Also, I feel very in peace whenever I read or listen the mormon messages and that makes me want to know more about this wonderful church!
    Much love from Brasil,

    Ana :)

  9. Hi Charity-

I read your blog because it inspires me. You look at life through a different lens and it reminds me to stay optimistic. Our ways of thinking are pretty similar(about nature, adjectives, etc.) and it's nice to be able to connect with somebody I don't even know!

Oh, and since some other people are playing the random info. game, I love sunsets and lilies. The color white. Fettucine Alfredo. Mmmm....

Okay, I'm done! Thanks for the post!

I Read because 1)I love good blogs 2) I got acquainted with Shawni's blog first and then realized you two are sisters so of course I had to follow you too 3) you have rad friends that I also really like 4) I want to live in SF one day 5) Your travel adventures and my expat adventures give us something in common. 6) I secretly hope following a new blog will result in a new follower for mine (shameless plug).

  13. I found your blog through Shawni's blog about 6 months ago when a post about SF caught my eye. I love your energy and take on life - your comments make me want to remember and be more of who I was before toddlers took over my life. And I miss the bay area - my husband's military career has taken us far from CA. I was in the Stanford ward almost 10 years ago and hope that you grow to love the peninsula as much as the city!

  14. I found your blog through your parents site. I love them. I really do. Their inspiring teachings came to me at a time when i really needed some parenting schooling and I found your blog at a time when I really needed to open my eyes and heart to joy of being alive. Your zest and zeal for life is a gift that is catching! I LOVE it! Favorite color is all shades of green. Love is awesome! and so are you! Have a magnificent weekend!

  17. Ahhh, the secrets out! My best friend who goes to BYU (well actually she's on her mission right now) introduced me to your blog last year. I love you passion for life. Your adventures have made me appreciate the little things in school and my life more and i've been looking at those experiences with a much brighter and happier light.

  18. Ahhh, i can't believe I am actually commenting on the blog of someone I don't know...who knew that double-dares actually work?! I found your blog from your sister Shawni's. I am from Ipswich, England, so I originally loved reading because of your mission experiences. I now live in Utah with my husband and baby girl. I keep reading because I love your happiness and adventures.

  19. I also found your blog through Shawni's blog and I am so glad I did! I spent at least an hour last weekend looking at all of your gorgeous travel pictures and mentally planning my next vacation. I am 28 years old, married, with a 2 1/2 year old boy. I live near Atlanta and work at an insurance company in training and development. I have not read much Steinbeck, but I definitely agree with the words he wrote to his son in the letter you shared. Keep writing and living passionately! Best, Jenn

  20. Although i don't know you, i read your blog, because your passion about life is just stirring. Everytime i read your blog it shows me, that life is a gift of god and wonderful in many ways and we have many reasons to be thankful for, and enjoy every moment of it. It makes me also think, we should see the positive in stressful and not so funny moments in life.

  21. Well, I read your blog to keep up on what's happening on your side of the world AND because most of the time you're awesome enough to post tons of amazing pictures of California which help me get my fix and remind me on the very hard days why I'm doing this stupid masters...so that hopefully one day I can make the move Stateside! P.s have you ever been to the Steinbeck museum? My school teacher sister visited there in the summer as she's teaching one of his books to her class. Apparently the area was rather dodgy tho and their motel they stayed in was a bit sketchy!! X

  22. I read your blog because it reminds me to focus on the joys of life. Your writing is funny, uplifting and full of love, and makes me want to visit San Francisco! I love the colour green. My name is Samantha and I'm from the Gold Coast, Australia. Keep dripping with passion!

  23. I found it through Shawni's blog. I think you are a great writer and always seem to be up to something fun. I've read several of your parent's parenting books and think it is interesting to see what they're kids are up to.

  24. I too found you through your sister's blog, which I found as a result of her I'm a Mormon bit. And my little sister and her husband live in Nob Hill so I love seeing your SF posts. My favorite color is currently Carolina Blue. Thanks for such vibrant posts!

  25. I'm a regular lurker on your blog. I found you through your parents, whom I've loved for years as amazing people and educators. I'm drawn back to your blog often because of your enthusiasm for life. I so wish I had been more that way during my twenties. I had a more dower and frustrated attitude then and I regret it. Also, I so deeply hope my girls can see a woman like you and admire who you are and what you stand for.

    Take care!

  26. I stumbled across your blog a while ago, from Shawni's blog. I spent all day inside just relaxing, then I realized it's Saturday night, "What the heck are you doing home on a Saturday night, Ehu?! You need to be out and bursting with passion". Then I thought of you & your blog, so here I am. What a beautiful letter from Mr. Steinbeck. I want to share it with my friends, via blog.
*True love thoughts: I need to find it again, SOON!! :)
*Steinbeck book recommendation: Yikes...I'll have to come back to this later.
    *Favorite color: Crimson.
*What makes me drip with passion: Cooking for loved ones, Being creative and being surrounded by friends.

I enjoy your blog posts and your fashion sense. I think it's daring and some would even describe it as "dripping with passion"--in the cool & funky way, of course. Cheers!

  27. What serendipity! I came to your site today with the intention of finally leaving a comment :-) I found you through your sister, Shawni's blog, which I found through your parents' blog (I have four boys and your parents provide invaluable insights to my parenting.)

So I started to read your blog shortly before the holidays and was delighted that you were willing to share your adventures and thoughts with readers.

We are now neighbors, as I live in Palo Alto as well. And the work you are doing with Clay Christensen is near and dear to my heart (I could go on forever about that subject.)

I would love to be of service in any way possible as you settle into Palo Alto, though I am sure you know our area pretty well and you probably know a lot of people through work and church- but just in case I would be happy to share anything I could (yogurt at Fraiche, a walk to the Dish, picture taking at the Rodin Sculpture Garden, biking to Shoreline.)

    All my best,

    Tasha

PS Thank you for the Steinbeck letter. I enjoyed it very much.

  28. If I had to write an embarrasing moment paper, you would be the star. While in a state of post-partum exhaustion after my seventh child was born, I went looking for an original copy of your mom's "witch" book on the internet. What I found was your blog. I still can't believe I dared to ask you to find me a copy. You were only about 10 years old. (This was when Shawni was pregnant with Max.)I am usually not so bold, so that gives you an idea how much that book means to me. It will always be a prized posession even though I cringe at my craziness whenever I look at it. (BTW, I wound up with 5 boys and 4 girls -- my only claim to success in Eyre-likeness.) Because of all the Eyres have taught me over the years, I feel like you are extended family. I read because you and your family are such great examples of life well and purposefully lived and I hope to become more like you. I'm sure this chapter of your life will be full of lessons on love. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I too (like many others) am a huge EYRE fan and have read many of your parents' books, read your sisters' blogs and generally admire you and your family from afar. You are an excellent writer! And I want to line you up with my cute brother-in-law. How weird/crazy am I?

I love reading your blog because of your use of language, your fun adventures, your photography, but mainly because you are "dripping with passion". 39. Hi Charity-
Thanks for "Dripping with Passion" You are inspirational and it's so much fun to follow along with you through life. I found your blog through your sister, Shawni whose blog I found through another blog. It was so funny because there was something so familiar about your family and I couldn't figure out why until a post on Bear Lake. I had read your parents' books long before I was a wife and mother. My number one career goal was to be a wife and mother and I felt it was part of my education to do adequate research beforehand. I remembered seeing that picture of your family in the tree and now here we are so many years later.

Your blog and pictures are like a vacation to me. A breath of fresh air when it feels like life is snuffing the oxygen out of me. You should know how much your readers enjoy reading about your passion for life, the love you have for your family and friends and sense of adventure. I am incredibly grateful for you sharing your life and incredible pictures with us.

I live in Southern California, am a wife & mother who does volunteer work for a local non-profit in my spare time.

    Keep living and loving passionately!
    Blessings-

I keep reading because no matter what seems to be happening in your life, your spunk and optimism shine through. Your blog is like a good book you don't want to put down. I want to keep reading and get to the end where all your dreams finally come true in whatever unexpected way that may happen.

  41. Hi Charity!
My name's Meredith and I've been reading your blog for a while. My favorite color is pink. I read your blog because when I grow up I want to be able to experience life like you have.
I think true love is when a beating in your heart gets so loud that your true love can hear it and theirs matches your rhythm. I think true love is beautiful and can only happen once, so you've got to grasp it while you can and never let go.
I'm not mormon, I'm baptist, but what I love about your blog is that it isn't religion specific. I feel like everyone can relate.
Thank you for sharing a little corner of your life with us.

  47. Hi Charity! I'm a recent visitor of your blog via Shawni's blog. Maybe it's because we're both single LDS ladies, close in age (who have some friends in common - Matt Durham was my MTC teacher! I believe Landon Hanson was on that Jerusalem trip too - and I served with him in Italia... Dani is also a familiar face from college...), but I find it so refreshing to read the thoughts of someone going through much of what I am - and in such a joyful way. I'm cutting back on my computer time these days, but I just want to thank you for being an inspiring spot when I do come online. Have a lovely day!

  61. I read because you remind me of the enthusiasm I felt for life as a single woman.

LOVE the quote by Steinbeck, especially where he gently reminded his son that the love may not be reciprocated, and that it was OK.

I come check out your adventures every week or so. I remember you playing the truth game with your Dad on Oprah back in the day...when my own children were babes.

It has been fun to see the beautiful and talented woman you have become.

Your parents let us stay at your cabins in Parley's Canyon when we first moved to Utah and had no place to live. We even had the opportunity to host your family while we lived in Hawaii. Anyway, I love reading about your passion for life, your adventures. I have long admired your family, and felt a sense of appreciation for you all, even if I don't know you all that well. I love your outlook on life whether situations are a bit frustrating or completely joyous. I definitely learn a lot when I read your blog, and hope to gain that sense of passion for my life as you have for yours. Thanks girl!!

  72. ...oh and I'm a 34 year old, married for almost 7 years, living in Lehi, UT, desperate to have a baby after trying for all these years. I'm working on appreciating the little things in life, and trying to have a better outlook. Trying to have more faith that even though things don't happen as we would like them to, there's a reason for everything and Heavenly Father is in charge. I love life, whether good or difficult. Again, your blog helps me to see the positive side of things - so again - thank you!

  73. I'm like many others: I read because I love the Eyre's and have read many books (specifically The Mothers Book of Secrets led me to all the blogs, which to me feel like extensions of the book, since reading a couple times a week helps me focus and reflect and be a better mom/wife/sister/friend/etc). I like your blog specifically because I've always found joy in the little things, too. Love your passion. :) And, randomly I know a couple people I've seen in your pictures. Such a small world! One I know from when she lived in Green Bay. Love her! The other I think worked at the library here where I live now. Do you know which 2 friends?
I was also at the retreat at your parents home, thanks for all your work with that...amazing!! :)
(I also talked with you once {email} about ordering tshirts, etc for future retreats. Random, yes, just something you might remember.)

  74. Hi Charity, I'm a middle-aged housewife from ABQ, New Mexico that chanced upon your sister's blog (71 Toes) and through that found your blog. I stalk it regularly because 1) I love your outlook on life 2) you put word together very nicely 4) you went to school in Wellesley and my BFF lived in Wellesley 5) you have great adventures and I like to live vicariously through you.

Thank you for sharing a part of yourself with me each day. And now I shall return to hiding....

  76. Hi there....

I first read your blog because I saw a link on your facebook about going over to India. Since then I've been checking it as frequently as I write in my blog. I love your outlook on life. It's hard not to read your blog. As you can tell by all the other posts on here, you are not your average everyday ordinary girl. I love how vividly you describe all of your feelings during your adventures. It seems like every day to you is an adventure. It helps me keep my eye out for the blessings I may be passing by without noticing.
My passion in life is for life; but more specifically for adventure. I love travelling, but haven't done a lot yet. I love hiking, so far I've climbed a different mountain every week that I've lived here in Utah, and I am obsessed with sailing, that is my greatest passion in life. My blog was all about how I lived on my sail boat, but now it's just about some of the hikes and stuff. Favorite color: Green.. all shades.
Hope you have an awesome week!

You take in the beauty of nature and appreciate it. Our God has created a beautiful planet and your words have inspired me to appreciate it. Thank you for your inspiring words and uplifting posts :)

  81. Hi Charity!
I read your blog because I met you when you were about 10 years old at your Aunt and Uncle’s house in Fremont. (Chris and Hedy) I was there for a family event (was dating your cousin) and I clearly remember you running all over their basketball gym at top speed and visiting with your Super-Duper Mom. There is a special place in my heart for the Eyre clan from that era so it is fun to hear what new adventures you have all been living.

My favorite color is green because it is the color of life.

My thoughts on finding true love (which took me many years to find) are this: You have to approach finding a husband as you did looking for a job. How many contacts did you go through to find your job? The larger the pool of people the better chance you have of finding what personalities work for you and learning which are toxic. Use the net to meet good Mormon men who are actively looking to date and to weed out bad matches. (So much more efficient than hoping someone asks you out AND you also will meet men you would never have met otherwise. It is a HUGE time saver. You live in a time where dating is completely different than your parents or siblings. Don’t try and match their stories. Yours will be your own.) Go out on mini-dates often. If a man isn’t interested in developing a relationship with you don’t take it personally. It just means it wasn’t a good fit. Period. (It goes both ways. You want and deserve someone who is "Dripping With Passion" in Love with You. Not luke warm.) If it isn't a good fit let go and keep looking. You’ll know because the energy will flow and he will say what he means and then do what he says.(Also...men are the worst at mind reading. Be direct and speak up.)
Read books on how to be in a quality relationship and learn those skills. Relating truly takes skill. Love>>> is something that you do after your fall into it.
PS Welcome to our part of the Peninsula! Have you gone to the Stanford Movie Theater for old movies and organ music? (Silent Movies on Friday night) Super fun.

  82. Reasons I Read (and Love) Your Blog:

    1. You love modern art the way I do and so easily capture the feeling it evokes.
    2. We are at really similar stages in our lives (the Peter Pan in between) and you are so honest in your reflections. It makes me strive to do the same.
    3. The photos! and colour! and descriptive language!
    4. I know one of your sister in laws through a friend of a friend, which got me hooked on your blog.
    5. You bounce back with resiliency on your way to each new adventure.
    6. I think we would be friends in real life (is that creepy? i hope not! haha).
    7. Once a YW, always a YW!

    Truths:

    8. Read East of Eden. The "thou mayest" still gets me.
    9. I know true love exists. I just hope it exists for me.
    10. Still looking for my dripping with passion!

Second...I read your blog because I like you and think you are great.

  84. That is such a cool letter. You find the neatest quotes & inspiring thoughts! And that, in part, is probably why I'm here. I first popped in on your blog from Shawni's just out of curiosity. I return every now and then because you are SO darn uplifting & eloquent and make me want to suck the marrow out of life just a little bit more. I love reading Shawni's blog because she's just ahead of me on the mothering path (I have 4 young girls) but I'm also drawn to your blog because it reminds me of the excitement of having hobbies & passions outside of kids. I am very passionate about mothering and living out this life now which is one I'd always dreamed about, but it's a breath of fresh air to know there's a big world out there (San Fran! Ireland!) and restaurants and giddy carefree moments. It's nice to walk in someone else's shoes for a second and then happily go back to my own life. By the way, I'm your neighbor to the north in Seattle. I'm also an East High alum (Talmadge's year).

  85. You inpsire me! I love to see and read about all your travels. I heard your Mom and sister speak at Time Out for Women and started following Shawni's blog. I secretly want you to marry my little brother...you are both so alike! :-)

  86. Hello from "far away" Menlo Park! ;)

I, too, came to your blog through Shawni's and absolutely adore your infectious love-affair with life; I only wish I could channel such vibrancy!

We have two little girls who would adore you, so if you ever need a kid-fix on the Peninsula, let me know! ;) We walk over to Stanford regularly and my daughter attends Bing Nursery School, so I'm always up for a Dish hike or milkshake at The Creamery (have you been to The Melt yet?!).

Keep your head up...you'll soon love the Peninsula as much as the City (in a slightly different way)!

    Kelli
P.S. Your dare worked because I *never* post on people's blogs! ;)
