downton abbey: love conquers all

IMG_4909 IMG_4910

when i lived in palo alto, my friends brittany, michelle and i gathered each wednesday night (for periods of time over several years) to watch episodes of downton abbey together. i love, love, loved these nights. they usually included enjoying takeout, catching up on life and having fun and/or supportive conversations, snuggling up with blankets on michelle's couch and all kinds of reactions and commentary while watching the adventures of the grantham/crawley family et al. i don't generally get into tv shows, but i really got into downton abbey, i think mostly because it was so fun to watch with my dear friends.

i could have watched the final season months earlier than my friends in america since i now live in england, but i decided to wait and watch an episode online each week through the past couple of months, as they aired in the usa, so that michelle, brittany and i could have text conversations about the story and characters and drama (and definitely the dresses - which are pretty much the best part of downton abbey in our opinions!). usually by each tuesday i'd get or send a group text "are we safe to talk about the latest episode? have we all seen it?" and then we'd jabber a bit.

brit and i decided that we should schedule a time to watch the series finale exactly concurrently (michelle was in the middle of a move to a different state so couldn't join us). to deal with the time difference from london to california, brittany so generously woke up at six o'clock in the morning! her text came to me at my two o'clock in the afternoon and we coordinated to press play on the final episode at the exact same time - haha! thus commenced one of the best 1.5 hours ever - it was hysterical to text back and forth, across that wide atlantic ocean and the whole of the united states, throughout the entire final episode. and we both loved how everything turned out.

if you're a downton fan but haven't yet seen the final episode, don't watch this video (it gives everything away)! but if you have seen the finale and/or have never seen downton abbey, watch this!!! it makes me so happy (sorry if you can't see this if you're outside of the usa - i'm confused by it working and not working on my computer). granny/violet/lady grantham (played by maggie smith) is my favourite character by far, and yes! she believes in love! i adore all these happy, romantic endings. indeed, love conquers all :)

well, this turned into kind of a long post about downton abbey! but it's a trivial, silly thing that just makes me happy! along with the much less trivial joy of connecting with bosom friends (across the globe!).

    2. It's a silly, trivial enjoyment by her own admission, and she's definitely not alone - I've only watched a few of the first season episodes and it wasn't my thing, but most of my friends have reactions similar to Charity, haha! There's something to be said for tv escapism at times - especially when gorgeous costumes are involved... :)

  4. So great! My daughter and I have watched Pioneer Woman, together, each week---while texting each other, for years. We love to cook/bake but, live a great distance apart. It is a terrific connection and lots of fun.
