faroe islands: unbelievable and unshareable

okay. i'm about to get really dripping with passion up in here. superlatives, drama, and perhaps even some capital letters are coming up...

because the faroe islands utterly blew us away. we spent three and a half days in this unique spot of earth in the north atlantic and we were just gobsmacked by beauty the entire time. what we saw and experienced was genuinely unbelievable, and it completely felt like we were in another world. the landscape around us was just so astonishing; the air tasted curiously delicious; there were scenes around corners that literally took our breath away; everything felt so captivating, untouched, and ethereal. i don't think i've ever felt sheer awe as deeply as i did last week in the faroe islands. it was all just outrageously AMAZING.

the second i saw the islands appear through the misty clouds from the airplane, i knew i'd never be able to explain or capture this place. it's unbelievable, and it's unshareable - there's no way i could adequately describe it and photographs just don't do it any justice. faroe islands is probably the most picturesque place i've ever been, but definitely the least photogenic. indeed, it just can't be captured!

but we sure tried! the best photos of this trip were taken by my brother (who has better equipment and better skill than me) - and i'm excited to share those soon when he sends them to me! - but for today here's a few pictures i snapped from our epic adventures in the faroe islands -- which i've pretty much decided is my favourite travel destination on planet earth (besides one spot that is in a league of its own - ten points if you can guess where that is!)

^^ how about this lake perched up on the cliffs?! i wish so much that i could capture what this was like in real life. absolutely surreal and so stunning. ^^

^^ the only pic i have of our whole group of adventurers. the kids were total champs. we got a lot of funny looks on the (pretty challenging!) hikes. but we rocked the traveling-to-an-obscure-and-not-definitely-not-super-kid-friendly-place bit! ^^

^^ eli and julie are so awesome, just rolling with it all with a four year old and two year old along for the ride. (the kids were strapped to their parents via a carrier or a leash whenever we were near cliffs!) zara did alarmingly well with all the hiking - she's a tough cookie! ^^

^^ can you spot the puffin in this picture? we saw hundreds of them! ^^

^^ we stayed two nights in this tiny, adorable village called gjogv. ^^
^^ a snap out the window from the road ... insane views like this abounded everywhere we went. we had a huge nine passenger van and it was a party! ^^
^^ from the top of the highest peak in the faroe islands (which yes, four year old zara hiked to the top of!) ^^
^^ on our last day, it was rainy (we were so lucky with no rain the days before!) and there were waterfalls everywhere - we literally saw hundreds from our drives (and even hiked up behind one!) ^^
^^ the country of faroe islands' parliament building in the capital, torshavn. ^^
^^ torshavn harbor. ^^

seriously, faroe islands is insanely cool and ridiculously beautiful. our high expectations for this adventure were hugely exceeded. unbelievable and unshareable. (but i'll still try ;) more posts to come!)

  1. I have 5 kids and bring them every where but....very curious how you make your safety decisions when traveling with Mo. I love that you bring the baby traveling, but truly how to you decide that a hike would not be unsafe or safe. Do you just accept the risk versus not doing it? Let's say Ian had a terrifble fall with the baby and they both got severely injured--and your in a place without good medical care. Do you just have to accept that as a risk. I want to be more adventurous but not sure how I get to your level.

    1. yeah, i guess we just realize that there are risks everywhere - at home, abroad, around london, etc. and just try to not do anything actually stupid ;)

  5. What type of food was available? Were there many places to eat? Did you stay at a bed & breakfast? What a fascinating trip!

    1. we only ate one meal at a restaurant - everything else was homemade meals. we stocked up at the grocery store and cooked/prepared at our airbnbs. there were only places to eat in the bigger towns, which we didn't spend much time in. food was expensive and not particularly fresh ;)

  6. My best friend came from the Faroe Islands and she married an English man and settled in Sussex. She always longed for home because she said nothing matched it for beauty.

    1. we took a train to edinburgh and flew from there. our options for getting to the faroes were through copenhagen, bergen (norway) or edinburgh - there is no flight from london.

good guess on galapagos, but these islands blew those away for me!
