our next grand adventure…

…is going to be way bigger and better than any world travel.
this july, we are becoming parents!

i’m excited to blog more about our experiences with pregnancy, but for today, here’s a few tidbits:
-ian’s reaction, when he opened an envelope i gave him with a positive pregnancy test in it, was the absolute best. we both felt and expressed outrageous amounts of pure joy.
-i am totally relishing learning about the miracle of pregnancy and childbirth. i don’t think i’ve ever enjoyed learning about something this much, and i’m completely in awe of the female body.
-it all doesn’t seem quite real, especially because i don’t look pregnant yet. this weekend though, i felt the baby move inside me for the first time!
-we are finding out the gender next month. we plan on inviting our new london friends to a little “reveal party,” and there’s going to be a pinata involved.
-i haven’t been sick (aside from some occasional nausea - and i’m so grateful!). but the past sixteen weeks i really haven’t felt like myself because i have very low energy and quite low interest in food – both of these sensations are very foreign to me!
-watching the screen during our ultrasound at twelve weeks was an absolutely phenomenal experience for both of us.
-we are having our baby at the midwife-led birth center at st. thomas’s hospital, which is a twenty minute walk from our flat and literally directly across the thames from big ben.

we are extremely grateful and tremendously excited for our next grand adventure!!!

  5. Ahh, congrats! Haven't been around many blogs lately, but I had to come read this post. I still remember your post several years back about how much you were looking forward to the opportunity to be a mother. It's better than you can imagine! And I'm so excited that you're using midwives and a birth center. You'll LOVE your experience. We've always used midwives and we had our third at home. Women's bodies are amazing. All the best!

  8. If I remember correctly you have a goal to have an unmedicated birth. I gave birth to my little one at home about 20 months ago, and will do it again this august! One book that was super informative was ina May's book the birthing guide! Especially the back half. The gift of giving life is another beautiful book. Last suggestion the womanly art of breastfeeding! You guys are gonna make amazing parents! Congrats!

    1. hi! i read ina may's guide to childbirth (not sure if that's the one you're talking about or if there's another called the birthing guide?!) and it completely changed my life. i absolutely loved it. thank you for the recommendations!

    2. I read tons and tons of pregnancy and baby books while I was pregnant with my first was child. In addition to Ina's book others i highly recommend are Anne Lamott's OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS and GREAT WITH CHILD by Beth Anne Fennelly. The 2nd is written for a young woman far away from family and friends so that may be especially poignant for you.

    3. I have birthed 3 baby boys at home and while home is obviously not for everyone, I LOVE natural birth. It's amazing! Ina May was read twice during each pregnancy, especially, as she mentioned, that second half. :) congratulations!!!

    4. Piping in on this one as well. We've had three babies (in 3 different countries - 3 different languages and different health care systems) and we were over-the-moon about Hypnobabies. We did the home study program and it was exactly what we needed. It laid out everything and the birthing experience was - dare I say it - enjoyable. It also helped my husband know his role in the birthing process and how to help which was lovely. My husband loved the experience with it so much he suggests it to anyone he can (and even wrote about it on our blog!). And we aren't affiliates or anything of the sort. Just really loved it.

Congrats! Enjoy the journey. It's awesome. And whatever comes for your individual birthing experience just be accepting of it, they are all so different. And kids are awesome!

  24. Congrats! My advice: Medicate, medicate, medicate. You have nothing to prove by doing it totally natural. Nice, romantic idea, but NO. I guarantee if you have this one with no meds, your next one you'll be asking for the meds from the start.

  50. Congratulations! I had two babies, the first one with meds and ended up with a c-section. The second baby, no meds, almost 10 pounds and if I had had meds would have probably ended up with another c-section too! Wish I hadn't had meds with the first, that c-section was horrible!

  57. I remember reading on your blog about how much you loved Max, and how he was the cutest baby in the world. You sure were a precocious little blogger -- a child blogging before blogging was even a "thing". It's hard to believe how much time has passed. Max is off on a mission and you are having a baby of your own... Congratulations! This will be your best adventure yet! I'm excited to watch your family grow.

  59. Catching up here and so excited to hear the wonderful news!! You will be such thoughtful and loving parents. Every pregnancy is wonderful, but that first one.... so much anticipation and excitement, experiencing it all for the first time, as well as all the reading and learning, everything is new. With just the 2 of you it's a special time. Cherish it. Write down your thoughts and feelings even if you think you could never forget them.

It's wonderful that you're planning for a natural birth. I'm certain you'll do great and will get to experience the most amazing joy (and pain- but the good kind!) you've ever experienced. The most sacred experiences I've had have been the labor and natural birth of each of my boys. The female body is amazing- trust it. (And breastfeeding is another wonderful and fulfilling experience, but it often doesn't just click- so don't be shy to ask for help as often as you need it. Baby & mama both have to learn- but it's so so worth it).
Lots of love to you both! (and baby too!)
